Temptation
The Lenten season opens this year with temptation. Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. Adam and Eve were tempted in the Garden of Eden. We will be tempted too.
Coming Down the Mountain
Matthew, Mark, and Luke each recorded the story we call the Transfiguration of Jesus. In it, Jesus is “transfigured” before Peter, James, and John. This story was important for the early followers of Jesus. It was a validation of who he was. But what about for us? What does this story mean for us?
Do Good; Seek Justice
Christians in Minnesota selected the theme for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: Do Good; Seek Justice. To recognize Christian unity, the pastor recently swapped pulpits with the pastor at Hope Presbyterian Church. He will share with us this Sunday the sermon he shared with them.
Raising the Bar…Theologically
Religious exercises can become rote. A box to check. Pray? Check. Worship? Check. That is something we must guard against. A teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount can help us.
Getting the ‘Three Questions’ Right
Sometimes we are pulled down by the past. Sometimes we swoon over the future. Each time we miss the present, God’s greatest gift to us. Jesus taught his disciples to seize the present and use it to do good. That’s a good word for us too.
What Are You Looking For?
It’s the question Jesus asked his first followers. It’s the question we should ask ourselves: “What are you looking for?” What do we want out of life? Faith? A Spouse? Children? What are we looking for in life?
Why Baptists Baptize
Baptists were the radicals of the Protestant Reformation. We rejected a practice of most other churches: infant baptism. Some accused us of child abuse because we withheld baptism. There is a reason Baptists baptize the way we do
The Great Escape
It is an appalling story. Herod ordered that all male children under age two be killed. Today we call it the slaughter of the innocents. Jesus and his family escaped to Egypt. What’s the message in this great escape
Believing in the Light While Sitting in the Darkness
This Sunday is Christmas Day. We will only have worship at 10:10 a.m. There will be no Sunday School. Please join us as we celebrate the light that overcomes darkness.
Unto Us a Child Is Born:Calling His Name Jesus
This Sunday is the final Sunday before Christmas Day. We will light the love candle in the Advent wreath and hear the angel’s message to name him Jesus.
The Second Sunday of Advent: Preparing the Way
Our journey to Christmas Day continues this Sunday. We will meet the preacher from the desert, John the Baptist. We will also observe the Lord’s Supper.
Unto Us a Child Is Born:Getting Ready
Next Sunday is Advent Sunday, the beginning of our journey to Christmas Day. Our Advent theme this year is “Unto Us a Child Is Born.”
Pastoral Thoughts about the Death of Jesus
The death of Jesus on the cross is seen as the world’s most selfless act, an innocent man suffering on behalf of others. Why did it happen?
Creation at Peace
The choral anthem, “Creation Will Be at Peace,” is a favorite of many at Weatherly. We sing it every year at Lovefeast. It comes from the prophecy of Isaiah. It is a beautiful, hopeful passage, a message we really need in these waning days of the pandemic.
Can We Still Believe in an Afterlife?
We all want to know. Philosophers and theologians have speculated. The world’s religions have their beliefs. Is there really life after death? What can scientific people believe about the afterlife?
Just Trying to See Jesus
We all know the song about the “the wee little man” named Zacchaeus. He may have been small in stature, but he had a giant conversion experience.
What Are We to Believe about the Bible?
Baptists have fought battles over the Bible. Is it infallible? Inerrant? Inspired? Or a book of wise sayings? Just what are we to believe about the Bible?
